Our guest speakers will be Ambassador Hemant Krishan Singh, former Ambassador of India to Japan, and Dr. Tomohiko Taniguchi, Special Advisor to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's Cabinet and Professor, Keio University. Dr. Taniguchi will kindly serve as a moderator and interpreter for the talk. Ambassador Singh and Dr. Taniguchi will discuss the state of the global order, developments in the Indo-Pacific and prospects for India-Japan relations.

[Biography] Ambassador Hemant Krishan Singh

Ambassador Hemant Krishan Singh served in the Indian Foreign Service from 1974-2010 and is a distinguished former career diplomat with extensive experience of geo-strategic and geo-economic issues as well as multilateral institutions, which underpin international law and commerce.

He has been India's longest serving Ambassador to Japan (2006-2010), Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor Leste (2003-2006), Ambassador to Colombia, Ecuador and Costa Rica (1999-2002), and India's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva (1995-1999). From 2011-2016, Ambassador Singh was Professor for Strategic Studies at ICRIER, a leading think tank in New Delhi, and has been associated with several public policy initiatives and Track II/Track 1.5 strategic dialogues involving major Think Tanks of India, Japan, Asia and the US. In June 2016, Ambassador Singh assumed responsibilities as Director General, Delhi Policy Group, which is among India's oldest independent think tanks focused on strategic issues of critical national interest. An alumnus of St. Stephen's College, Delhi, where he studied (1967-72) and later taught (1972-74), Ambassador Singh holds an M.A. degree from the University of Delhi.

[Biography] Dr. Tomohiko Taniguchi

Dr. Tomohiko Taniguchi serves Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as an advisor to his cabinet. He has worked for more than six years on Prime Minister Abe's foreign policy speeches. He is also Professor, Keio University Graduate School of System Design and Management.Prior to assuming the current posts, he spent three years, 2005-2008, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) as Deputy Press Secretary.

Dr. Tomohiko Taniguchi

During the period he wrote policy speeches for Taro Aso, then Foreign Minister and then Prime Minister Abe.Until he joined the MoFA he spent twenty years with Nikkei Business, a weekly business magazine, with a three-year stint in London, during which the Foreign Press Association in London elected him President, the first from Asia.While with the magazine, he also spent sabbaticals at Princeton University as a Fulbright Visiting Fellow, at Shanghai Institute of International Affairs and at Brookings Institution as a CNAPS Fellow.Raised in Kagawa and Okayama prefectures, he earned LLB from the University of Tokyo. He also holds doctorate in national security from Takushoku University. He has authored a number of books, including the one published in 2018 under the title "Truth be Told of Shinzo Abe." He has also appeared live on BBC, CNN, and so on more than 250 times.
